When did we become so….. cryptic?. Lately I find myself trapped in a loop, watching 80’s classic movies, as if watching them I could figure out where did we go wrong in present times, as if they kept a hidden message between the lines that we were unable to decipher and for that reason everything has gone down the drain. Before, movie theaters were somewhat magical and seductive places, where the seats were impregnated with dreams, laughter and deep feelings, and not neat and tidy aseptic mega cinema halls where nothing is allowed (a true declaration of intentions of the New World). It might be that the mentioned decade embraced us in our childhood and youth ), and left that deep impression in our hypothalamus that the world could be a better place, that the good guys almost always win and that villains have a strange code of honour and loyalty. Structure was simple but it always made sense, it surprised you, it shook you from within… The final moral of the stories, with open ending interpretations for further sequels with closer and more familiar characters, not factories of expressionless perfect clones. Boy meets girl – their love is impossible because of some circumstance (family, relationship, illness…) – love will conquer all, and in the end they will live happily ever after. That’s right, the classical and rancid fairy tale structure. Who cares?. We have evolved so much (sarcasm) that women want to build a pyre with all those videotapes and burn them down to ashes because we don’t want to be damsels in danger waiting for a macho man to rescue us. What about the story of our evolution as women till present days?. The past is always there, it always pops out no matter how much we deny it, and there’s nothing wrong about it. We must see things in the right context, with intelligence and perspective. In Don Quixote (wonderful and recommendable book of the Spanish Golden Age) the compulsive reading of chivalresque literature by the main character drives him with a blessed and fabulous madness to become a valiant knight who is an expert at solving problems, and commends himself to his beloved until the «proper» world that surrounds him tries at it’s hardest with energy, envy and dislike to send him back to a reality that kills him… and it all begins with, yes, the burning of books and thus, of dreams. This vision I have will seem (or not) obsolete and even old fashioned, paternalistic and condescending, because youngsters are in their moment and in their right to scream, kick out and change, but I am in a moment of balance between two halves, sometimes I fall to the protest side but other times I look back with nostalgia, that’s why even though stories (read, watched or heard) will always have the emotion of knowing how the narrative of the story develops to the final crescendo; this time, with an ache in my heart, I choose melancholy.

Besos, Petra
